In 1945, USS Indianapolis sinks
The American cruiser USS Indianapolis was torpedoed in the Philippine Sea by a Japanese submarine, sinking in 12 minutes. Approximately 300 sailors went down with the ship, and another 600 died while awaiting rescue. This is the greatest single loss of life at sea in the history of the US Navy.
